Behavioural Safety Training

During a 6-month period over winter, all employees of Centrum Pile and sister company Aarsleff Ground Engineering embarked on a programme about behavioural safety.

Delivered by Health and Safety training provider Q1tum and presented by Paul Bower, the aim of the weekly seminars was to provide all delegates, management and operatives alike, with a clear understanding of how behaviours and the nature of everyone’s decisions contribute to workplace culture. Consequently, the overall outcome was to minimise risk by building on the existing safety culture, positively influencing behaviour and changing or unlearning of habits.

As a 2018 Gold RoSPA Award winner (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents), Centrum Pile and Aarsleff Ground Engineering are keen to uphold their excellent health and safety credentials by rolling out the course to everyone employed by the two organisations, including all site, factory and office staff.

The employees were divided into groups of 10-15 from all areas of the organisation, each taking part in one all-day interactive session. The programme is hoped to provide an understanding of the behavioural psychology and the tools required to influence behaviours at all level within the respective workplaces with an overall view to further strengthen our positive safety culture.

Other learning outcomes included:

  • An understanding of the business culture from top to bottom and how this affects overall behaviours
  • Effective influencers of behaviours
  • The relationship between conscious thought and subconscious thought
  • Key principles of behavioural science in relation to safety
  • Identifying hazards in the workplace

The programme asks everyone to consider the consequences of their actions, not just at work, but in their personal life too. Furthermore, in each session the employees fill out an anonymous survey about the organisation’s current health and safety culture. With director-level commitment from the organisation’s Senior Leadership team, the programme demonstrates that the messages and observations coming from the survey’s results are going to be backed by the highest level of the organisation who can drive their voice forward.

A steering committee formed of Centrum and Aarsleff employees will continue the dialogue around health and safety to ensure that the life and health of our staff – one of our core values – remains the highest priority.

Robert Speakman, STEQ Manager said:

“This is an exciting opportunity for the whole business to engage and work together to drive improvements. Whether we like it or not we are all in this together and our individual and group decision at all levels need to be considered in the full context if strengthening our position”
